I am a freelance writer and jazz musician. My consultancy company The Improvising School provides workshops to develop improvisational skills for musicians, teachers, leaders and writers. My current research interests are: i) understanding improvisation as a mode of creative practice within artistic and social contexts and ii) the significance of silence in music. I am a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a Fellow of the Royal Society of the Arts.
